Coal India Limited (CIL) is a state-owned Maharatna PSU coal mining company headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. CIL was founded in 1975 by the merger of 24 state-owned coal mining companies and is currently the largest coal mining company in the world.

  • Primary Business Segment: production and sales of coal
  • Business operations: include Coal mining, Coal washing, Coal beneficiation, Coal transportation and Coal marketing

In addition to mining activities, Coal India Ltd. also administers various facilities such as workshops and hospitals.

It operates within India. The company oversees a total of 322 mines, comprising 138 underground mines, 171 opencast mines, and 13 mixed mines as per FY23 corporate filing. The company has a network of over 1,000 sales offices across India.
