Indian Auto Parts Makers Expand in the US to Avoid Tariffs

Indian auto parts companies are increasing their presence in the US to avoid higher costs due to new trade policies. With President Donald Trump’s tariffs starting on April 2, companies are looking to set up or expand factories in the US. This move will help them avoid extra charges on exported goods.

The US is the largest export market for Indian Auto companies accounting for 28% of their total shipments. During H1FY25, India exported $3.1 billion of automotive components to the US, a 7% YoY growth.

Many Indian companies like JK Tyre, Samvardhana Motherson, etc have factories in Mexico, from where they supply parts to US carmakers like General Motors, Ford, and Eaton. However, moving production directly to the US could provide long-term benefits and stability.

Another advantage for Indian companies comes from US-China trade tensions. Since the US is reducing imports from China, Indian manufacturers have a chance to gain more business. Motherson, which already has 20 plants in the US, could see a big boost in orders.

Although setting up new factories requires huge investment, Indian companies are talking with major suppliers and carmakers to check if it’s worth the cost. If successful, this expansion could increase India’s role in the global auto industry, boosting exports and creating more jobs.
