U.S. Tariffs on Key Imports: What It Means for India

On February 18, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors. The move aims to boost U.S. manufacturing but may strain international trade.

India’s gross exports to the US are one of the lowest among its emerging markets at around 2.0% of GDP. India could feel the impact, especially in pharmaceuticals. The U.S. bought 31% of India’s pharma exports, worth $8.73 billion in 2024. Since India supplies 47% of America’s generic medicines, these tariffs could raise healthcare costs in the U.S. and hurt Indian pharma companies. Major Indian firms like Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s, and Cipla rely heavily on the U.S. market.

Experts believe Indian exports are competitive, which may reduce the effect of the tariffs. Currently, the U.S. does not impose any import duty on Indian pharmaceuticals.
For auto components, while India’s direct car exports to the U.S. are small (0.2%), North America accounts for 31% of its exports. India exported auto parts worth $6.69 billion to the U.S. in 2023-24. Sona BLW, which gets 40% of its revenue from the U.S., expects minimal impact. The effect on India’s semiconductor industry will also be minimal, as it is still in its early stages.
