Top News of the Day
- India’s eight core industries grew by 2.9% in February 2025, down from 5.1% in January. This slowdown was mainly due to lower crude oil, natural gas, and refinery output, though sectors like fertilisers and cement showed growth.
- India’s GST collections have seen a nice boost! For March 2025, they rose by 9.9%, reaching ₹1.96 lakh crore. This is an improvement from February, when collections grew by 9.1% to ₹1.83 lakh crore, thanks to a solid rise in revenue from domestic sources.
- India’s finished steel imports from April to February rose by 15.8% to 8.98 million metric tons, with major imports from South Korea, China, and Japan. To curb this, a 12% safeguard duty on certain steel products has been recommended. Meanwhile, steel exports fell 33.7%, with Italy remaining the largest destination despite a 56.2% drop in shipments.
- Moody’s projects India’s growth to be 6.5% this fiscal, the highest among G-20 nations. Tax measures and monetary easing are key drivers. India’s strong domestic focus and financial buffers help it attract capital and withstand cross-border outflows better than many peers.
- India’s external debt rose 10.7% to USD 717.9 billion in December 2024, up from USD 648.7 billion a year earlier. The external debt to GDP ratio stood at 19.1%, with US dollar-denominated debt being the largest component.
- India and Japan have signed loan agreements worth 191.736 billion Japanese yen for six projects, including forest management, water supply, urban transport, and aquaculture. Key projects include the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Program (Phase 3), Delhi Mass Rapid Transport System (Phase 4), and Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant (II).
